Mentoring

Overview / Mentoring / Mission, Principles / Results

High school students, parents, teachers, neighbors -- almost anyone can be a buddy. It only takes an hour a week across the school year to make a positive impact on a young person's life. Buddies spend their time doing spelling, multiplication tables, reading, playing chess, doing yoga, talking, writing, and creating art.

All mentors must complete an application, provide two letters of recommendation, pass a WA state patrol check, and attend a two-hour orientation training. Once a match has been made, Buddies meet with the student's teacher to discuss the social and academic needs of the student, and to schedule a weekly meeting time.

During the 2005-6 school year, Buddies can be found at these Powerful Schools partners: Hawthorne, John Muir, and Orca @ Columbia elementary schools.
