During the 2004 – 2005 school year:

  • Over 1300 students were able to participate in over 90 different program offerings designed to support the classroom learning and the Search institutes 40 Developmental Assets.
  • Students surveyed on developmental assets reported that Community Schools programs helped them feel more successful in school. Due to participation in Community Schools' classes:

93% of them said they got along better with other students during the school day


93% of them said they made friends easier


60% felt they got in less trouble


73% felt better about themselves overall


87% felt they made better decisions in and out of school

In year-end surveys to the classroom teachers of participants of the Community Schools programs they informed us for all CS participants an average increase of:


84% in homework completion throughout the year


91% in reading skills throughout the year


91% in math skills throughout the year


87% increase in classroom participation


82% increase in self-management skills


These trends continue to increase from term to term.

  • With the assistance of the SOWA (Schools Out Washington) training staff, CS staff was able to provide additional training to our after-school instructors and school staff.
  • CS continued efforts to provide classroom-aligned tutoring. Collaborating with teachers and parents increased student attendance and accountability, improving their homework completion habits.
  • CS lengthened its schedule by four weeks.
