Job Summary
The Executive Director serves as the chief executive of Powerful Schools, reporting to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission, strategic plan and financial objectives. In overseeing all day-to-day administration and work of the organization, the Executive Director provides strategic leadership for the ongoing success of Powerful Schools.
Major Duties
Partnerships
- Maintain partnerships and collaborations with schools and other local organizations.
- Represent Powerful Schools programs and point of view to agencies, organizations and the general public.
- Develop new, mutually beneficial partnerships with private and non-profit entities.
Fundraising and Public Relations
- In partnership with the Development Director, seek out and nurture relationships with potential and current major financial supporters to ensure the overall success of the fundraising plan.
- Serve as the chief spokesperson for the organization for media and other public forums.
- Prepare and deliver presentations and speeches to advance the work of the organization.
- Work closely with the Communications Manager to maintain effective communications, public relations, and fund development strategies with stakeholders.
Governance & Administration
- Serve as the chief executive, overseeing all day-to-day administration and routine work of the organization.
- Hire, orient, supervise, and train lead program staff. Evaluate staff at least annually in the performance of their duties. Maintain human resource practices that promote a productive workplace.
- Oversee and lead the organization through continued growth and change
- Recommend Powerful Schools’ programs and policies to the Board of Directors.
- Negotiate and sign contracts on behalf of the organization.
- Develop recommendations for a long-term strategic plan through the work of the Board’s planning and executive committees.
- Ensure the objectives of the board-adopted strategic plan are met and within budget.
- Evaluate the services of Powerful Schools in relation to specified goals and objectives.
- Work closely with key staff and board members in the development and recommendation of the organization’s budget.
- Provide financial oversight for the organization.
- Ensure the development and implementation of strong internal controls.
- Maintain official records and documents and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
- Prepare reports as requested by the Board.
Other Duties
- Perform other functions as assigned by the president or Executive Committee or as needed to enhance the mission of the organization.
- Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.
Minimum Qualifications
The position requires that an individual:
- Has earned a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
- Possesses five years minimum experience in leading successful organizations in the non-profit or for-profit sectors.
- Possesses five years of supervisory experience in a diverse working environment.
- Has successful experience working with people of diverse ethnic, cultural, racial and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Has proven ability to attract, develop and sustain strong relationships with major financial supporters from the philanthropic, foundation and corporate communities.
- Communicates effectively orally and in writing and works effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Has proven ability to attract, recruit and inspire community members to become actively involved in meaningful ways.
- Demonstrates an interest in issues of children and education.
Compensation
- $60,000-$70,000 plus health and vacation benefits
